Uganda gorilla permits, explained
The hour you spend with a mountain gorilla family is one of the most powerful experiences in wildlife tourism. The permit system that makes it possible is also one of the most successful conservation funding tools in Africa.
What a permit costs
A standard gorilla trekking permit in Uganda is USD 800 per person — it covers ranger guiding, park entry, and one hour with a habituated family. The "habituation experience" (4 hours with a family being habituated) is USD 1,500.
Why they're capped
Each habituated gorilla family is visited by a maximum of 8 people per day. Visits are short and respectful, minimising stress on the animals and reducing disease transmission risk. The cap is what keeps the experience sustainable.
How to book
Book early. Peak-season permits (June-September, December-February) frequently sell out 6+ months in advance. We secure permits as part of your itinerary — included in your Travana trip price.
The day itself
A pre-dawn briefing at the park headquarters. Trackers head into the forest before dawn to locate the family. Once they're found, your group sets out — typically a 2 to 8 hour hike depending on where the gorillas are. The hour you spend in their presence will rearrange how you think about the natural world.
Practical kit
Sturdy waterproof boots, long trousers, long sleeves, gardening gloves, a light rain shell, and water. Hire a porter at the trailhead — they're inexpensive (~USD 20) and a key source of community income.
