What is the best month for a Maasai Mara safari?
The Maasai Mara is extraordinary year-round, but the right month transforms the trip. Here's how we think about it.
July to October — The Migration
This is peak season. The wildebeest herds have moved north from the Serengeti, and the Mara River crossings are happening daily. Big cats are active, predators are fat, and the photography is cinematic. Lodges fill 8-12 months in advance and rates are at their highest.
January to February — Sunny and dramatic
A lesser-known sweet spot. Skies are clear, grass is short, big cats are visible, and many resident herds remain. Cubs are everywhere. Rates are 20-30% lower than peak.
March to May — The long rains
Lush, green, dramatic skies. Lower rates and far fewer vehicles, but some camps close and roads can be tricky. For experienced safari-goers, the photography is spectacular.
November to December — The short rains
Brief afternoon showers, dramatic light, green plains, festive-season specials. A quietly excellent time to travel.
Our recommendation
If you can travel any time, choose August or September for the migration drama. If you have school-age children, late December or February is often perfect.
